Enabling success: Challenges of scaling a law firm

Challenges of scaling a law firm with Toby Harper, Founder and CEO of Harper James

Welcome to the third episode of our latest podcast series: Enabling Success for Founders and Entrepreneurial Businesses.

In this episode, Alison Burdick, our Director of Strategy & Growth, speaks with our very own Toby Harper, Founder and CEO of Harper James. We talk about what inspired Toby to branch out and start his own law firm, what his goals and ambitions are for the company over the next few years and how he overcame the challenges most first time founders struggle with when starting a business.

You can listen on various streaming platforms, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music here or alternatively you can watch on YouTube below.

How did I get started? … I was in a pretty fortunate position because my now wife had a job lined up at a big firm. That gave me the opportunity to take a bit of time out from work and take a bit of a risk in terms of setting up the business. I did that as a two and a half year PQE lawyer.

About the author

When Toby was one year post-qualified an opportunity came up to go on secondment at a Midlands based venture capital business called Midven. It was here, whilst working in a super entrepreneurial environment, that Toby began to formulate the idea of creating a law firm that was designed to support the needs of venture backed, and ambitious businesses.

Founded in 2014, Harper James has always been on an upward trajectory. With an average year-on-year growth of 44% over the past three years, Harper James has become one of the fastest growing law firms nationwide.
