We are expanding our development team and are looking to hire a QA Engineer to help us implement a high-quality testing strategy as part of our development process.

About us

Harper James is a modern law firm with a focus on building cutting-edge technology to manage legal clients, matters, billing, and time tracking. Our platform integrates with tools like Xero and Microsoft 365 and provides analytics, AI-driven assistance, and more.

What we are looking for

We are seeking a QA Engineer to establish and drive a QA process that will integrate directly with our existing SDLC. Your role will be to ensure consistent, high-quality releases through a structured testing process, with the long-term goal of increasing test automation over time.

While initial priorities will focus on creating test strategies, managing test plans, and executing manual and exploratory testing, we are looking for someone who can help grow our automation capabilities as the platform evolves. This role will work closely with developers, the product owner, and technical support to deliver high-quality releases that meet the needs of the business.

What you will do

  • QA Process Development: Design, implement, and maintain a QA process integrated with the development cycle to ensure quality at every stage.
  • Test Planning & Execution: Create comprehensive test plans and cases, managing their execution and tracking via Azure DevOps.
  • Collaborative Integration: Work closely with the development team to identify potential quality issues early in the development cycle and address them before release.
  • Progress Towards Automation: Work with the team to identify areas for automation and gradually introduce automated testing into the process as the platform grows.
  • Regression Testing: Lead regression testing efforts to ensure that new features don’t affect existing functionality.
  • Continuous Improvement: Continuously refine and improve testing methodologies to match evolving business and technical needs.

Required skills and experience

  • Proven experience in a QA Engineer role, with a strong focus on designing and implementing QA processes.
  • Experience with tools such as Azure DevOps for managing test plans, tracking test cases, and defect management.
  • ISTQB Foundation Level
  • Strong understanding of SDLC and experience working within Agile teams.
  • Familiarity with test automation tools (e.g., Selenium, Cypress), with a focus on planning for future automation.
  • Ability to perform manual testing while identifying opportunities for automation and optimization.
  • Experience working with web applications and APIs, ideally in a .NET and Angular environment.

Desirable skills

  • ISTQB Advanced Level – Test Analyst
  • Knowledge of automation frameworks, with a view to scaling automation over time.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and how testing fits within them.
  • Experience in legal tech or billing platforms is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to effectively communicate findings and solutions.

What we can offer you

  • Competitive salary range of £35,000 – £45,000 (depending on experience).
  • Remote working with occasional visits to our Birmingham office (2 days/month).
  • 33 days holiday, including public holidays.
  • Option to buy up to 5 holiday days a year.
  • Private Healthcare
  • Death in service benefit.
  • Professional development opportunities and support for further training
  • The opportunity to establish and lead QA within a growing team.
