Manors Golf stays on course with a robust intellectual property strategy
Manors Golf

With reimagined garments designed for a contemporary audience, Manors Golf offers a fresh perspective on golf attire, creating a modern golf wardrobe that effortlessly pairs high-performance fabrics with modern trends.

Co-founded in 2020 by Jojo Regan, Luke Davies, and Nick Watts, Manors was established with the goal of changing the perception of golf and making it accessible to players of all ages. In a relatively short period of time, Manors has experienced significant growth. The brand now has a global presence with its products in major retailers in the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, Germany, and Thailand. More impressive is their direct-to-consumer growth which Jojo expects to be over 600% this year.

Manors have invested heavily in building a very distinctive brand and logo. Determined to protect the business’ brand identity, Jojo sought the help of our intellectual property team.

Jojo says:

I’ve been very hot on trade marking everything we do – not only because I’m passionate about protecting our brand identity in the key territories that we operate in, but because it was initially a prerequisite for our investors.

Head of Trade Marks, Ben Evans worked closely with Jojo to undertake an extensive review of Manors trade mark portfolio, helping them understand their current position. Based on the insights gained from this review, Ben advised Jojo to register trade marks in additional territories that are core to the business. Ben also helped Manors to cut back and simplify some aspects of their trade mark portfolio where the trade marks were too broad and did not align with the businesses goals.

Jojo explains:

Ben is fantastic, he's doing a lot of the proactive thinking for me. Ben conducted a review of our trade mark portfolio and he gave me his advice as to where he thinks we need to bolster our trade mark protection. I told him about our expansion plans in Asia, so we focused our time there as opposed to looking at territories where we have very small footprints such as in South America, for example.

Another important aspect of Manors trade mark strategy is the ongoing monitoring and enforcement of their trade mark rights. With Manors experiencing rapid growth in recent years, the company has faced an increased risk of trade mark infringement. Ben has successfully helped Manors enforce their trade mark rights to stop brands that have used Manors’ imagery and copy, presenting them as their own materials.

As subscribers to our Enterprise subscription plan, Jojo and the team at Manors benefit from one hour of legal advice each month, which accrues if unused. Enterprise clients also receive discounted hourly rates for additional hours purchased through the plan, as well as access to the full range of our legal business support.

When asked how the Enterprise plan benefits Manors, Jojo says:

I like that I can communicate with Harper James on my own terms. We have access to all the legal services we need under one subscription plan, so there’s no need for us to look elsewhere. It’s great having a one-stop solution that’s both efficient and cost-effective.

Speaking about his experience of working with Jojo, Ben says:

It’s been great working with Jojo in protecting the Manors brand worldwide. It’s such an exciting time for the business as it grows internationally, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with Jojo to ensure that the brand is safeguarded along the way.
