Charles is a specialist in financial regulation, having qualified as a solicitor in Scotland in 2014. He advises financial institutions, their clients, and services providers on both regulated and unregulated financial services. This includes drafting and reviewing agreements; providing legal opinions; contributing to disputes advice; and assisting with applications to—as well as correspondence with—the financial regulator and ombudsman.
I enjoy getting to understand a client’s business, then helping them achieve their vision and project goals. Given my keen interest in how technology and financial services interact, I stay connected with the vast fintech ecosystem in my adopted hometown, Edinburgh.
Having trained and worked for several years at one of Scotland’s leading commercial law firms, Charles has broad experience advising retail financial services clients. This includes secondments at Lloyds Banking Group and Scottish Power. Through his work in specialist legal teams at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), he developed expertise in consumer credit, payments, and e-money.
Having worked in private practice, in-house and at the FCA, I can apply both a commercial perspective and help clients understand the regulator's approach.
Whilst a lawyer at the FCA, I drafted Handbook rules and guidance, and was the lead lawyer for SME lending and finance. I gained a broad insight into the treatment of firms at various stages of interactions with the regulator by providing legal support to teams in Authorisations, Innovate, Supervision, Policy, Resolutions, and Interventions. In private practice, I've drafted consumer credit agreements for one of Europe's largest car dealerships and provided long-term, in-depth support to a peer-to-peer lending site, including reviewing and expanding their T&Cs.
Charles is a keen martial arts and yoga practitioner, as well as a new puppy-dad.
