James is a Senior Employee Share Schemes Solicitor at Harper James. He graduated from university in South Africa and completed national service in the army before returning to England. James qualified as a solicitor in 2015 and has worked in the employee share schemes and incentives space for almost 20 years.
James specialises in the design, implementation and operation of employee share and share option schemes (particularly EMI & CSOP), and related tax matters for predominantly private companies. He also has an interest in private company share valuations for incentives purposes. James has also advised on the incentives’ aspects of investments and transactional matters.
I really enjoy working with entrepreneurial businesses and supporting them with clear, commercial and practical advice in the niche area of employee share schemes and incentives.
James enjoys working with ambitious start-ups across multiple sectors, and high-growth companies embarking on various funding rounds.
Prior to joining the firm, James was a legal director at a Top 40 UK national law firm and, at an award-winning tax consultancy in London.
Outside the office, James is a sports enthusiast generally and has completed several marathons for charitable causes and ultra-marathons.
