Clients to benefit as Harper James invests in legal automation start-up
Contract Mill

Supporting businesses who use new technology and championing innovators who develop exciting new products both lie at the heart of what makes Harper James Solicitors a fast-growing, challenger law firm. That’s why when a new European start-up designed a product that’s set to transform the way legal services are provided across the world, Harper James Solicitors was right at the front of the queue to back it.

Our founder and CEO, Toby Harper, is now one of a number of entrepreneurs who has invested in Contract Mill, meaning we will become one of the first UK law firms to make use of its service. The Finnish-based firm, which was founded in 2016, has created a no-code document automation SaaS platform which is one of the first in the world to have a 100% visual automation interface. Its next-generation SaaS makes the automation of even complex documents faster and easier, helping law firms save resources, time, and money.

Commenting on their collaboration with Harper James, Contract Mill’s founder and CEO, Kaisa Kromhof, said:  'We are very excited to have Harper James joining as an investor and starting to use the platform. Harper James is a great example of a forward-looking law firm that wants to create ever more value for their clients, in an accessible way, using modern business models powered by technology. Our vision and values are in full alignment and we both want to change the way legal services are delivered – in a way that benefits both the clients and the service providers.

'There is a huge market opportunity for companies who understand the importance of the price of legal services and who are able to create those services in a scalable and profitable manner with the help of technology. This is really a win-win situation for all and we are happy to be able to play a part in it with Harper James.'

Explaining how the platform can help both solicitors and clients, Kaisa adds: 'As lawyers, we saw a huge underserved market. Namely, law firms and companies who needed document automation but who are not capable or willing anymore to take on the total cost of automation that is inherent in the complex incumbent systems. Contract Mill’s innovative automation solution is fast and easy to implement, and possible to be taken into use not only internally but also in client facing work.'

'This means that law firms are able to serve more customers at the same time, with less manual work, still fully compliant and with high quality. Clients, meanwhile, are able to enjoy the smooth and fast co-operation with the law firm, with prices that are accessible thanks to the slow repetitive manual work having been minimized or removed totally. This allows lawyers to sell value instead of their time  - something that benefits all when done with the help of modern technology.'

Harper James Solicitors will soon begin to roll-out of the platform among our team of legal experts, almost all of whom have previously worked for a top 100 UK law firm or in-house at large international businesses.

Founder of Harper James and Contract Mill investor Toby Harper said: 'Contract Mill is a brilliant product which we believe will enable us to deliver legal services even more effectively than we already do. As innovators in the law space, we are always looking to invest in new technology that delivers both value and consistency for our solicitors and our clients. Contract Mill will potentially transform the way we are able to operate internally, helping us to focus on what we do best - supporting businesses to grow and helping them navigate all the challenges that come their way.'
