YouTube has led to the creation of a new generation of celebrities for whom posting videos online is not just a full-time job, it is also a multimillion-pound enterprise. New start-up Viewture is working alongside the world’s biggest influencers while also trying to identify the sector’s future stars. Viewture has been set up to offer influencers deals to buy the rights to the back catalogue of previously shared videos, some of which may have attracted tens of millions of clicks.
Content creators who enter into agreements with Viewture receive an advance based on advertising revenue projection, which they can use to invest in their own businesses. Viewture also enters into future deals by securing the rights to new content, which can be an attractive option to influencers, as it enables them to move forward knowing they will have a regular income stream to fund their business.
David Page, Viewture’s founder and CEO, said: 'We set up the business because we saw an opportunity in a very big market. We provide a service which allows content creators to benefit from the previous success they’ve had on their channel. We work right across the YouTube network as well as the wider video-sharing ecosystem, connecting with creators who share content on areas like sport, gaming, beauty or anything which successfully engages an audience.'
One of the hurdles David and his team faced as they set off on their business journey was how to create the contracts they required to enter into agreements with creators. It was a complex area because each contract Viewture offers is bespoke to its customers. Creators can choose which videos they wish to sell the rights to and how much that will generate for them upfront. In order to get the support he needed, David turned to Harper James Solicitors after being impressed by the support we’d provided to another of his companies Quantum Data Analytics. Our commercial and corporate teams, who specialise in supporting ambitious businesses to grow from start-up to scale-up, were able to provide the expertise Viewture needed.
David Sant, a commercial solicitor specialising in technology and data protection, said: 'As Viewture’s business is built heavily around the Google and YouTube infrastructure, our first task was to understand the complex rules of this ecosystem to get the client to where they needed to be. At Harper James Solicitors we have the legal expertise to do that and were able to help put contracts in place which will enable Viewture to move forward with confidence.'
Corporate partner Jas Bhogal added: 'I’ve worked with David for many years at Quantum Data Analytics, so it is fantastic to be a part of this exciting new enterprise. Helping our clients to launch and grow new businesses by giving them the confidence to move forward with a great idea is at the heart of what we do at Harper James Solicitors.'
Commenting on the support Viewture has received, CEO David had this to say: 'Thanks to the team at Harper James, we were able to get the answers to some of the key questions we needed. Having good, accessible and trusted legal services support is key for any new business. Spotting an idea or a gap in the market is one thing. But you need to have the right support in place to create a business that works for you and your customers. In Harper James Solicitors we have that support - and more.'
