Ben is a Partner and Head of Trade Marks at Harper James. He qualified as a trade mark solicitor in a boutique IP practice in 2011 before joining top-50 firm Blake Morgan in 2012 where he stayed until joining Harper James in 2023.
Ben is a dual-qualified solicitor and Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and he assists clients with trade mark clearance searching, brand strategy and world wide trade mark protection as well as dealing with a range of intellectual property disputes and litigation.
I have experience of both sides of the brand protection coin: developing, registering and monitoring trade mark portfolios and also the enforcement of those trade marks. That experience helps client register trade marks that are genuinely enforceable, it also gives me a deeper understanding of the client’s business and portfolio.
A significant part of Ben's practice is dealing with trade mark applications before the UKIPO and WIPO, coordinating complex filing projects using international agents and dealing with contentious proceedings before the tribunals.
Over the years Ben has advised all manner of clients, from start-ups to multinationals, UK-based clients and those from around the World. With a particular expertise in FMCG, retail and lifestyle clients.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is getting to know such a wide range of clients operating in different sectors and industries. My approach is to spend time with the client speaking about their business, what makes them unique and the challenges they face. This allows me to provide tailored advice that aligns seamlessly with their needs.
