Jas qualified as a solicitor in 2006. She has 12 years' experience working almost exclusively with start up companies, high growth potential SMEs, along with venture capitalists, other investment platforms and individual and corporate investors.
Jas also provides expert support and advice on matters involving acquisitions, disposals, investments, shareholder agreements and corporate governance.
I love being part of the journey that our clients go on and supporting them with the various challenges they face. I've supported many clients from start-up stage to full exit and I particularly enjoy managing our clients risks associated with the investment process.
Jas graduated from the University of Leicester with a degree in Law and completed her LPC at the University of Birmingham. She qualified as a solicitor with MFJ Solicitors in 2006 and has specialised in corporate law ever since.
I qualified as a corporate lawyer with MFJ solicitors and shortly thereafter joined Shakespeare Martineau for 7 years. During this time I went on secondment for 2 years to Midven (a fund manager in Birmingham) and acted as their sole legal counsel. It was during this time that I developed a real interest in investment work.
Jas has particular past experience of working with clients in the technology, life sciences and healthcare, manufacturing, including food and drink, hospitality, retail and leisure sectors.
Having worked in house for a fund manager, this gave me an insight into fund structure from the funds perspective and their investment criteria. I've specialised in investment work for over 12 years now and it has allowed me to develop my own approach to the investment process. I tailor my advice specifically for my client, whether the client is the investee company or the investor.
Jas understands that the investment process can be an exciting but complicated time for business founders. Getting the right advice from the outset, particularly around founder rights and protection, is key.
The investment process is very much the start of a relationship between the parties and it is important to ensure that the parties are aligned on how they see their relationship working in the future. This often involves detailed negotiations about the corporate governance of the company and managing the risk associated with the investment. I always take time to understand what is important to the client to ensure that their rights are fully protected following completion.
Outside of work, Jas enjoys spending time with family and friends. She also loves to travel, explore new places and experience different cultures.
Most of my spare time is spent with my family, running around transporting my two children to their various social activities. I love entertaining and we host dinner parties regularly where we always try to make a new dish to expand our culinary skills. This is one of the reasons Harper James is perfect for me as it allows me to do the job I love as well as spend quality time with my family.
Jas has also taken part in our Spotlight on a Solicitor series, sharing her journey into law and proudest career moments. Read the interview to hear about her life in law.
